Facts about CMC, Italian translator

Hello to everybody. I am Carlo Mario, Italian translator. I live in Acqui Terme, a small and lovely town (18,000 souls) in the north-west of the happy land of Italy, where I was born in 1961. I am married with Paola and we have no children. My favorite hobby is working as much as I can. (This was for potential clients: my real favorite hobby is made of running, swimming and cycling: in a word, triathlon).

As a freelance translator I am specialized in travel books, science (medicine, biology) and music, especially of the baroque and classic period: my doctoral dissertation dealt with Athanasius Kircher's Musurgia Universalis and I published (please see below) two articles about this subject.

Education

Diploma di Maturità Scientifica (General Certificate of Education in Science), Liceo G. Galilei, Alessandria, 1980.

Laurea in Lettere Moderne (Master of Arts Degree), University of Turin, 1990, summa cum laude, with a doctoral dissertation about the VIII Book (De Musurgia Mirifica) of Athanasius Kircher's Musurgia Universalis.

Diploma di Pianoforte, Conservatorio di Alessandria, 1985.

Experiences

I translated the entries Caikowskij and Jamaica and the biographic entries of South American composers of the XX century for DEUMM - Dizionario Enciclopedico Universale della Musica e dei Musicisti (Universal Encyclopaedia of Music and Musicians), UTET, Torino.

I was the 'ghost translator' of some articles about scientific subjects, especially medicine and biology; in this case it is difficult for me to openly give references, because they aren't published under my name. If you are interested and need more information, please contact me privately.

For the Italian publishing company EDT I translated the following books by Lonely Planet Publications, Australia: Indonesia (with others), France (with others), Greece (with others), Prague (with others), Mexico (with my wife, Paola Bellocchio), Laos, Samoa, Travel with Children, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Myanmar, California and Nevada (this last two with others), Jordan, Costa Rica, Morocco, South Africa (with my wife Paola Bellocchio), Tunisia, Australia, Tokyo City Guide, Istanbul and West Africa (with my wife).

I translated for EDT also Edges of the Earth by Richard Leo (Holt, 1995). Actually I am translating the travelogue In Ethiopia With a Mule by Dervla Murphy (John Murray Publishers, 1968).

I also translated (again with my wife) a fair amout of the EDT website.

As a freelance I translated the correspondence (150 letters) of a family of Italian emigrants who moved from Friuli (north-eastern Italy) to the USA in the late 20s and settled in the States.

I also worked for several years as a teacher of Italian language and literature at Istituto Marello, Asti. I quitted this job to become a full-time translator. I extensively work as a teacher of computer and information science in several schools in Acqui Terme and around.

My own papers

"La musurgia mirifica di Athanasius Kircher: la composizione musicale alla portata di tutti nell'età barocca", Musica/Realtà, numero 37, aprile 1992.

"Comporre senza conoscere la musica: Athanasius Kircher e la musica mirifica", Nuova Rivista Musicale Italiana, numero 3, luglio/settembre 1994.

Italian version of Emily Postnews Answers to Your Questions on Netiquette by Brad Templeton. My version is monthly posted to several newsgroups and is also available on the WWW. This translation appeared also on Internet News, one of the most important Internet-related Italian magazine.

Services

In Italy rates are usually calculated on a per byte of translated text basis but I can also use the per word of original text basis that is most common in the USA. Of course rates may vary (considerably) according to difficulty, length and time given for the accomplishment of the work.
